Awareness of Mental Health

Building Understanding, Confidence and Compassion

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Every individual will experience periods of positive mental wellbeing and times when they may struggle, and for many people, the workplace plays a significant role in supporting both.

Our half-day Awareness of Mental Health First Aid course has been designed to provide an introduction to mental health awareness, helping learners develop a greater understanding of mental wellbeing, recognise the early signs that someone may be struggling and gain the confidence to start supportive conversations.

The course is suitable for organisations that wish to promote a more open, compassionate and supportive workplace culture, whilst providing employees with practical knowledge that can be applied both at work and in everyday life.

Rather than training learners to diagnose or treat mental health conditions, the course focuses on recognising concerns early, reducing stigma and encouraging individuals towards appropriate professional support where required.

Promoting Positive Mental Health

In recent years, awareness of mental health has rightly become an important part of creating safe, healthy and productive workplaces.

Current guidance encourages employers to develop supportive working environments where conversations around mental wellbeing are normalised, stigma is reduced and employees feel able to seek help without fear of judgement. Developing mental health awareness across an organisation can improve communication, strengthen teams and encourage people to look after both themselves and those around them.

Our Awareness of Mental Health First Aid course introduces these principles in a practical and accessible way, giving learners a greater understanding of the factors that influence mental wellbeing while encouraging a positive and proactive approach to supporting others.

Understanding Mental Health and Recognising the Signs

The course provides learners with an introduction to some of the most common mental health conditions and the ways they may affect individuals in everyday life.

Participants explore the factors that can influence mental wellbeing, discuss the impact of stress and learn how to recognise some of the early signs that someone may be experiencing emotional distress or poor mental health.

Importantly, the course also helps learners understand the boundaries of their role. Mental Health First Aid awareness is not about providing counselling or replacing professional healthcare. Instead, it focuses on listening without judgement, offering reassurance where appropriate and encouraging individuals to access the support that is available to them.

By improving mental health literacy, learners become better equipped to respond with empathy, understanding and confidence.

Practical Conversations That Make a Difference

One of the most valuable skills developed during the course is the confidence to begin supportive conversations.

Many people recognise that a colleague, friend or family member may not be themselves, but often feel uncertain about what to say or worry about saying the wrong thing.

Through guided discussions and practical learning activities, learners explore how to approach sensitive conversations respectfully, listen actively and respond appropriately while maintaining clear personal and professional boundaries.

The course also highlights the importance of signposting individuals towards appropriate sources of support, recognising when further help may be needed and understanding that effective support often begins with simply being willing to listen.
